Philospohy, Dogma and The Impact of Greek Thought in Islam
This monograph deals with the entry made by Greek philosophy into the Arab Near East, the mixed reception it received, and the way it was incorporated by philosophers of Islam. The 24 papers contained in the volume seek to illustrate and substantiate the claim, contrary to the claims of some scholars, that Arabic-Islamic philosophy was not a replica of Greek philosophy, lacking on that account any measure of independence or originality. Read in conjunction with the author's two collections of studies in Arabic, published in 1970/82 and 1994, and his "History of Islamic Philosophy", 1970/83, these papers exhibit the authors findings and reflections on the interactions of philosophy and dogma in Islam.
