Student Engagement in General Speaking Class. Thesis. English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. Supervised by Yusniati N. Sabata and Nurhaida Lakuana. This research aims to investigate the engagement of students in the general speaking class of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. The study employs a qualitative approach as the research method. The instruments used for data collection include an observation checklist and interviews. The subjects of this research were 10 students from the 2nd semester of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. As a result of the study, the researcher found that some students actively engaged in the learning process, such as by asking questions, responding to questions from the lecturer, participating in discussions, showing enthusiasm in the learning process, and being able to provide arguments or ideas during the learning process. However, there were also students who were less engaged in the learning process, such as only speaking when the lecturer asked for feedback regarding the lesson, preferring to ask friends instead of directly asking the lecturer about unclear material, showing minimal engagement in the learning process, struggling with pronunciation, having difficulty speaking English correctly, experiencing challenges in using correct grammar when speaking English, and frequently feeling nervous when speaking English. This research also offers new dimension, namely social engagement, social engagement refers to where students are more likely to be actively involved and interact more with friends than interacting with lecturer in the learning process.
