Active And Passive Clause Transformation In Banggai And English: A Contrastive Analysis

Igamurti Ndekano - Nama Orang;

Active and Passive Clause Transformation in Banggai and English; A Contrastive Analysis. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Luwuk. Supervised by: Hardianti and Mukmin. This study aimed to get information about similarities and differences in the structure of active and passive clause transformation in the Banggai language (Seasea dialect) and English. The method used was qualitative descriptive with five native speakers from Babang and Pandaluk villages as the subjects. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using transformational grammar theory and a contrastive analysis approach. The results of the study revealed one similarity and three differences. The similarity lies in the pattern of movement transformation with non human doer: S+P+O becomes S+P+A, which is similar in both languages. The differences include: (1) the deletion of agents is optional in English, but in Banggai (Seasea), human agents and agent determiner are obligatory deleted; (2) English inserts a new word, while Banggai (Seasea) does not; and (3) the verb changes to V3 in English, while Banggai (Seasea) uses the affix in' as prefix and infix. The implications of this study are not limited to the teaching of English to Banggai speakers, but also contribute to the preservation of the local language. This research provides a foundation for the development of bilingual teaching materials that incorporate local cultural values.
