Correlative Conjunctions Used In Undergraduate Theses Of English Education Study Program

Fatimah Nonsi - Nama Orang;

Analysis of Correlative Conjunctions Used in Undergraduate Thesis from 2016 to 2019 Batches. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. Supervised by Hardianti and Yuliana Mangendre.
Correlative conjunctions are paired conjunctions that connect two grammatically equivalent elements in a sentence to ensure clarity, balance, and cohesion. The purpose of this study is to analyze the usage pattern of correlative conjunctions in the theses of students from 2016 to 2019 of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. This research specifically examines four aspects: frequency of use, context of use, appropriateness of use, and common errors. This research used descriptive qualitative method with corpus study approach. The data collection technique was content analysis as the main data collection technique. The data sources of this study were 28 theses from the 2016 to 2019 batches, which were selected by purposive sampling. The results showed that there were five types of correlative conjunctions used by students, namely: both. and, either...or, not but, not only...but also and whether...or. The most frequently used is both. and, which points to students' tendency to express additive relationships. In terms of context, the five types are mostly found in the second Chapter, which indicates that students often use them to present comparisons, definitions, and syntheses of concepts. Most students showed basic grammatical understanding, since they still created common errors of parallelism, misuse of conjunction pairs, and punctuation errors. Finally, the findings of this study are expected to support more effective grammar instruction, foster students' awareness of the accurate use of correlative conjunctions, and inspire further research on syntactic features in academic writing.
