Students' Perception Of The Localaccents In Speaking English
Students' Perception of The Local Accents in Speaking English. Undergraduated Thesis, English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk.
Supervised by: Mukmin and Hardianti. This research aims to determine the perceptions of students in the English Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University Luwuk regarding the influence of their local accents when speaking English, as well as to describe how local accents affect the way they pronounce certain types of sentences. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, with the research subjects being English Education students from the Banggai, Saluan, and Balantak ethnic groups. The data collection techniques used are interviews and observation sheets. The results of this research indicate that students' perceptions of local accents vary, namely in terms of awareness, self-confidence, attitudes toward preservation, and understanding of the importance of local accents. The influence of local accents can be seen in pronunciation and intonation, differences in sound and dialect, difficulties in speaking and misunderstandings, as distinctive features or obstacles. Meanwhile, the results of speech acts indicate that only a small proportion of students are still influenced by local accents through pronunciation and intonation errors. However, the majority are able to adapt to standard pronunciation, ensuring clarity in speech. The success of communication is more determined by practice, awareness, and habits than by the local accent itself. The benefit of this research is to provide an understanding that the success of communication in English language learning is more determined by practice, awareness, and language habits than by the influence of local accents.
