Zakaria Mutalib - Nama Orang;

Challenges and Strategies in Teaching English for Disabled Students at SLB Neger Salakan. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. Supervised by: (Abdul Rabbi Arrasul) and (Yuliana Mangendre) This study discusses the challenges faced by English teacher and the strategies they use in overcoming the challenges to teach English for students with special needs at SLB Neger Salakan. This research is motivated by the importance of inclusive education and the unique challenges in teaching English to students with special needs, such as physical, intellectual, or emotional barriers. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with English teacher at SLB Neger Salakan. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Based on the results teacher face several major challenges, including challenges in delivering learning materials, maintaining student focus, differences in students' types of disabilities, and difficulties maintaining students' mood. Other challenges include a lack of teacher experience and students' dislike of a particular teacher or subject. Communication difficulties, especially with deaf and speech-impaired students, as well as barriers in reading and writing abilities are also significant problems. Teacher implemented various strategies. These strategies include simplifying sample material, repetition techniques, and adjusting teaching based on the type of disability (e.g., using songs for disabled students, flashcards for deaf students). Teachers also maintain the mood of students by inviting them to play or chat, giving appreciation, and using visual media such as animated videos, pictures, flashcards, film screenings, and storytelling. A personal approach and curriculum adiustments are also applied. This study shows that English teachers at SLB Neger Salakan face complex challenges but manage to overcome them with adaptive and student-centered strategies. These findings provide valuable insights for other teachers, schools, and policymakers to improve the quality of English-inclusive education for students with special needs.
