Identifying Errors In Using Basic Sentence Elements By Students Of SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk
Identifying Errors in Using Basic Sentence Elements by Students of SMP Negeri I Luwuk. Undergraduate thesis, English Education Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Luwuk. Supervised by: Nurhaida Lakuana and Abdul Rabbi Arrasul. This study, entitled "Identifying Errors in Using Basic Sentence Elements of Students at SMP Negeri I Luwuk, " investigates the types of errors made by students and the factors influencing their difficulties in constructing English sentences. The research was conducted with 17 eighth-grade students and applied two instruments: students' worksheets and interviews. The analysis revealed four main types of errors, with omission being the most dominant. Omission errors occurred mostly in the use of prepositions, articles, possessive determiners, and auxiliary verbs. Misformation ranked second, especially in subject-verb agreement and auxiliary usage. Addition and misordering appeared less frequently but still reflected students' challenges in forming accurate sentence structures. Furthermore, the interview results indicated several contributing factors to these errors. Students often relied on literal translation from Indonesian, which resulted in inappropriate sentence structures. Overgeneralization of grammatical rules also caused errors, particularly in verb usage and word order. Limited exposure to authentic English input was another major factor, as students rarely practiced English outside the classroom. In addition, ineffective learning strategies hindered students' progress in mastering basic sentence elements. Based on these findings, it is suggested that teachers provide more contextual practice, promote active learning strategies, and increase students' exposure to English usage.
