The Influence Of Social Media In Using English Slang Of English Education Study Program Students
The Influence of Social Media in Using English Slang of English Education Study Program Students. Undergraduated Thesis of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. Supervised by ST. Marhana Rullu and Nurhaida Lakuana. This research aims to determine the influence of social media intensity on the use of English slang among students of the English Education Study Program at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk. The method used is a quantitative correlational approach with simple linear regression analysis. Data was collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed to 57 students from the 4th and 6th semesters. The research focused on four major social media platforms: TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. The results show a very strong and positive correlation (r = 0.911) between social media intensity and the frequency of slang usage. The coefficient of determination (R) is 0.830, indicating that 83.0% of the variation in slang use can be explained by the intensity of social media usage, while the remaining 17.0% is influenced by other factors not explored in this study. The significance value (p = 0.000) confirms that this influence is statistically significant. These findings suggest that the more frequently students engage with social media, the more likely they are to use English slang in daily communication. This research highlights the need for awareness in balancing informal language trends with formal academic language use.
